OUR VETERINARIANS

Meet the folks who make it all happen. We see big potential in every moment, & care deeply about what we do every day.

Dr. Kelly Barnes

Owner, Veterinarian

Dr. Kelly Barnes has wanted to be a veterinarian ever since she was six years old. She always felt a kinship with the family pets, and wanted to do everything in her power to improve their lives. For her, there was never another option—Dr. Barnes has always known that she was destined to help others’ pets as a licensed veterinarian!

Dr. Barnes grew up in Washington, D.C. until the age of 13, when she and her family moved to Nebraska. After high school, she relocated to Iowa to study veterinary medicine at Iowa State University, earning both her undergraduate and Doctoral degrees there.

Dr. Barnes became a member of the 30th Street Animal Hospital family in May of 2003, and has been helping the pets and animal parents of Indianapolis ever since. For her, seeing a family overwhelmed with joy as their pet begins the road to recovery is the ultimate reward for her hard work!

Dr. Barnes and her husband, James, have a college-aged daughter and a pair of twins in high school. The family has six loveable pets: Rosie the Boston Terrier; a deaf Boxer/pit bull mix named LeBron James who regularly donates blood at the local emergency hospital; and four cats who go by Parnell, Pete, Mary, and Baby Kitty.

Outside of her interests in veterinary medicine, Dr. Barnes is fond of researching her family’s genealogy and traveling whenever the opportunity arises. Her husband owns a small passenger plane, and they’ve been fortunate to explore many new places by way of their airplane—most recently, the couple spent three amazing weeks in remote Alaska!

Dr. Sam Smith

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Sam Smith’s own experiences with his family veterinarian growing up made a lasting impression on him. When the time came to choose a career path, thinking back on those positive memories helped him decide that veterinary medicine was the perfect fit. Dr. Smith hasn’t looked back since! Now, he’s thrilled to serve the area’s pets and animal owners as an Associate Veterinarian with the 30th Street Animal Hospital team.

Dr. Smith hails from Monticello, Indiana and attended Purdue University for his undergraduate coursework before continuing on to Purdue’s College of Veterinary Medicine to earn his Doctorate. During his senior year, he secured an internship at IndyVet Emergency and Specialty Hospital. Near the end of his internship, he was offered a position as a general practitioner here at 30th Street Animal Hospital and he gladly accepted. He’s been a member of the clinic family ever since!

Medically, Dr. Smith likes wound repair, diagnostic work, and wellness care procedures like dental cleanings and spay-and-neuter surgeries. Most of all, he loves to see pets recover from their ailments and get returned to their owners healthier and happier than they were before.

Away from work, Dr. Smith enjoys exercising, playing guitar—he suspects it would have been a career possibility had he not fallen in love with veterinary medicine!—and spending time with his family, friends, and pet at home. Dr. Smith has a Cornish Rex cat named Dracula whose favorite pastime is zooming around the apartment when the mood strikes him.

Dr. Knibbs

Associate Veterinarian

At a young age, Dr. Knibbs, knew she was going to work with animals – though as a child she was more interested in dolphins and other marine mammals. After interviewing her family veterinarian in South Bend, IN for a high school project she realized she wanted to be a “dog-tor” and was able to start shadowing. Horses took sway in her heart after volunteering at a therapeutic horseback riding facility. In the years to follow she worked at multiple barns of various sizes from a home with 2 pasture pals to breeding and training facilities with 100+ horses. She even spent six months working nights in Oklahoma where she helped 300 foals be born.

Dr. Knibbs attended Michigan State University for her undergraduate coursework in animal science before concurrently attending both Purdue’s College of Veterinary Medicine to earn her Doctorate and University of Minnesota School of Public Health for her Master of Public Health degree. After graduation she worked for USDA FSIS as a supervisory public health veterinarian to help protect and ensure the safety of our food supply. She currently works full-time for the Indiana Department of Health as an enteric epidemiologist, investigating outbreaks of food borne illness. However, Dr. Knibbs missed clinical medicine and has been thrilled to join 30th Street Animal Hospital team part-time. She loves preventative medicine, healthy lifestyles, and nutrition to help keep our pets healthy from a young age and reduce disease burden and other chronic illnesses.

Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Knibbs is an avid reader, hiker, and coffee-haulic. She and her partner have four loveable furballs: Dandy Andy the Labrador Retriever and three cats that are out of this world – Moon, Sun, and Jupiter. She can often be found walking Andy at various parks across the Indy area, doing house renovation projects, and visiting friends and family.
