Did you know that August 22nd is Take Your Cat To The Vet Day? We know, Fluffy would probably rather be celebrating Give Your Cat Tuna Day or Hug Your Cat Day. However, even though coming to see us may not be your pet’s favorite thing to do, she will definitely feel the benefits of proper veterinary care. Read on as a Lawrence, IN vet offers tips on taking Fluffy to see her doctor.
Your cat’s veterinary care needs will change as she ages. Kittens will need to come in a few times, for their initial vaccinations and exams, as well as microchipping and parasite control. We also recommend that all cats be spayed or neutered before they reach maturity. Adult kitties will need to come in at least once a year, for routine exams, vaccinations, and parasite control. Once Fluffy enters her golden years, she’ll need more frequent appointments, particularly if she develops medical issues, such as arthritis, diabetes, or other issues. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.
No matter how old your kitty is, it’s important to watch for signs of illness, and contact your vet right away if you notice anything unusual. Some things to watch out for are hiding, poor grooming, reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory issues, and litterbox trouble. Uncharacteristic behavior and vocalizations can also be red flags in our feline friends. Since cats often instinctively try to hide their symptoms, you may not notice Fluffy isn’t feeling well until she’s quite sick. Therefore, it’s important to act quickly if you know or suspect that your furball is ill.
Does your cat hate car rides? If so, she is certainly in good company. Many of our feline patients absolutely hate riding in cars! There are some things you can do to make the trip easier on Fluffy. Start by adding comfy bedding and fun toys to her carrier. Once you’re on the way, keep a radio playing and roll the windows down, so your furball gets some fresh air. You’ll also want to avoid sudden stops and starts, if possible. If your furry buddy gets extremely nervous in cars, ask your vet about using cat-calming products, like sprays or treats.
