Signs Your Dog Needs Emergency Care
September 1, 2017

Did you know that dogs have been our companions for over 15,000 years? Man’s Best Friend is very intuitive and perceptive, and has gotten quite good at communicating with us over the years. Fido can be very clear about letting you know he wants to play or needs to go out. However, it isn’t always that easy to tell if our canine pals aren’t feeling well. Therefore, it’s very important for you to watch for potential signs. Read on as a local East Indianapolis, IN vet lists some signs that your dog needs emergency care.

Lack of Appetite

Healthy dogs typically have healthy appetites, to say the least. If Fido isn’t interested in eating, he could be sick.

Breathing Difficulty

Trouble breathing is always a red flag. If Fido is wheezing, gasping, or struggling to breathe, contact your vet right away.

Vocalization

Uncharacteristic vocalizations are another indication of pain and/or illness in our canine companions. Fido may whine, whimper, or bark continually if he is sick.

Restlessness

By restlessness, we don’t mean energetic. It’s perfectly normal for our furry pals to be playful and frisky. What you want to look for is signs of distress, such as constant pacing, or trouble getting comfortable.

Collapse

Collapse is a serious red flag! If your four-legged friend collapses, take your pup right to the vet.

Difficulty Urinating

If Fido is having trouble going, contact your vet immediately. This can be symptomatic of serious illness in dogs!

Vomiting/Diarrhea

An occasional upset tummy may not be anything unusual, but repeated or excessive vomiting or diarrhea is definitely concerning.

Known (or suspected) Injury or Toxin Ingestion

If Fido has hurt himself, or if you know or suspect that he has eaten something poisonous, don’t wait to see if he develops symptoms: contact your vet right away.

Other Symptoms

These are just a few signs of illness in dogs. Other symptoms include pale gums, rapid heartbeat, trembling, stumbling, and lethargy, to name a few. Ask your vet for more information.

Tips

When it comes to caring for our canine buddies, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. If you’re not certain whether Fido is sick or not, err on the side of caution and contact your vet immediately.
