National Dachshund Day
June 15, 2021

Do you have a Dachshund? Put a pawprint on your calendar: National Dachshund Day is June 21st! These long, lovable pups are quite popular, and they make wonderful pets. A local veterinarian discusses the breed below.

History

The Dachshund’s history is quite long and distinguished … just like his torso! Fido has been around for at least 600 years. These cute pups were originally developed in Germany to hunt badgers. In fact, the word “Dachshund” translates to “badger dog” in German. The Dachshund became such a formidable hunter that packs of them were used to hunt wild boar, another ferocious animal. Fido was welcomed into the ranks of the AKC back in 1885, along with 14 other breeds. (1885 must have been a busy year for breeders!)

Basics

The Dachshund is nicknamed Hot Dog or Weiner Dog. They’re also sometimes called Doxies. Standard sized Dachshunds can weigh up to 32 pounds, while the miniature versions stays under 11. Fido has three coat types: long, smooth, and wirehaired.

Care

Like any other pooch, Fido needs great nutrition, proper veterinary care, and suitable exercise to thrive. Don’t let your canine buddy get chubby! Extra pounds will put a lot of strain on Dachshunds’ long backs, which can lead or contribute to some very serious back and spine issues, such as slipped discs. Jumping is very dangerous for these guys. Get your pup some pet ramps or stairs, and don’t let him jump on or off furniture.

Temperament

Dachshunds are extremely affectionate, lovable, and cuddly. However, like other hunting dogs, they are also very smart and energetic. Don’t let that small size and cute face fool you: Weiner dogs can actually be quite feisty. They’re great trackers with a strong prey drive and are also sometimes a bit rambunctious. In fact, a 2008 study listed them as the most aggressive breed! Proper training is an absolute must here. Just stick to positive reinforcement: these pups love praise and compliments! (They’re pretty fond of treats and belly rubs, too.)

Celebrating

Just how does one celebrate this special occasion? Well, by having some hot dogs! Your canine companion can have some too, though you don’t want to give him too much processed meat. If you don’t eat meat, have some veggie dogs instead. Fido may also appreciate a new toy.
