Senior Cat Care Tips
June 15, 2017

Is your cat approaching—or already in—her golden years? While Fluffy’s basic needs won’t change as she ages, you may want to take some steps to keep her comfortable and purring. In this article, a local Lawrence, IN vet discusses senior cat care.

Food

Good nutrition is crucial to your pet’s health. Offer Fluffy a high-quality kitty food, and choose healthy treats. Certain supplements, such as fish oil, may be helpful. Ask your vet for advice, including tips on changing over to a senior-formula cat food.

Litterbox

Opt for a litterbox with low sides, which will be easier for Fluffy to use. If you have multiple floors in your home, keep extras on every level, so your pet doesn’t have to use the stairs as much.

Grooming

Older cats sometimes have trouble reaching their entire bodies to groom themselves. Give your furball a helping hand by brushing her gently.

Bedding

Believe it or not, Fluffy will manage to sleep even more than she used to. Make sure your kitty has plenty of soft beds and napping spots. This can be a store-bought pet bed, or just a soft blanket in a box or wicker basket.

Playtime

Playing is great for kitties, both mentally and physically. Offer Fluffy lots of toys, and play with her daily.

Pet Ramps

Older cats sometimes have trouble jumping up to their favorite napping spots. Set out pet ramps or stairs for your feline buddy.

Cat Furniture

Fluffy may have difficulty climbing a regular cat tower. Get your kitty something that is easy for her to get in and out of, such as a pet tent or kitty condo.

Veterinary Care

Your cat will need to come in more often as she ages, so her health can be closely monitored. Be sure to keep up with Fluffy’s exams, vaccines, and parasite control. Also, watch for signs of illness, such as hiding, poor grooming, vomiting, and diarrhea. Contact your vet right away if you notice anything unusual.

Kitty Comforts

Small touches—such as leaving a nightlight on after dark—will go a long way towards keeping Fluffy content and purring. Remember to pay lots of attention to your kitty, so she feels loved and safe!
