Microchipping Your Pet
May 15, 2017

Did you know that getting your pet microchipped is one of the best things you can do for your furry friend? The numbers on lost pets are very sobering: almost one in three pets will get lost at some point in their lives. A microchip will greatly increase the chances of you and your pet being reunited if your furry pal ever goes missing. If your pet isn’t microchipped, we recommend getting this done immediately. In this article from 30th Street Animal Hospital, a Lawrence, IN vet discusses microchips.

Basics

Microchips are very small, about the size of a single grain of rice. Chips don’t transmit information: instead, they only contain a unique ID number, which correlates to your records in the manufacturer’s database. The microchips can be read with special scanners used by vets and the staff at animal shelters, which helps connect lost pets with worried owners.

The Procedure

Getting your pet microchipped will only take a few moments. Your vet will use a hypodermic needle to inject the chip beneath your pet’s skin. For Fluffy and Fido, the process is very much like getting a shot. Complications are very rare, and there is no recovery time needed, aside from a few extra cuddles and ear scritches.

Records

Getting your pet microchipped is a big step, but it’s only the first part of the process. You’ll need to fill out your records for the chip manufacturer’s database. Remember to update this information whenever you move or change contact information. (Tip: try using the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip lookup to see if your records are correct.) Also, have your vet check the chip regularly, to make sure it hasn’t moved or malfunctioned.

Keeping Your Pet Safe

In addition to microchips, there are some other ways to reduce the risk of your pet getting lost. If you have a cat, simply keeping Fluffy indoors will help keep her safe. As for Fido, keep him leashed when you leave your property, and make sure that your fencing is secure. Proper training and spay/neuter surgery are also very important. You just can’t be too careful when it comes to our furry friends!
