Meet the Persian
May 15, 2021

Do you have a Persian? Persians are one of the most popular breeds in the world. These sweet, affectionate furballs really are very sweet and lovable pets! A local vet discusses the Persian below.

 History

The Persian has a fairly long and distinguished history. In fact, they are one of the oldest known breeds of cats! They appear in hieroglyphics dated as far back as 1684 BC. As one may suspect, these kitties likely originated in Persia, specifically in the region now known as modern-day Iran. An Italian traveler named Pietro Della Valle brought them to Europe in the 1500’s. It probably didn’t take Fluffy long to wrap her new friends around her paws.

Temperament

Persians are usually quite relaxed and laid back kitties. They’re very affectionate, and absolutely love to snuggle. In one study, the Persian scored higher than non-pedigreed kitties in many categories, including vocalization, cleanliness, and how affectionate they are. However, they can be choosy about whose laps they will grace. Fluffy may bond very closely with you, but pretty much snub everyone else. That’s purr for the course with these cats!

Grooming

One of the Persians’ most distinct features is their pretty fur. Fluffy will need some help with her beauty routine. We recommend brushing your cute pet every day, or at least every other day. Your feline friend will also need the occasional bath. If you adopt a Persian kitten, it’s best to get your little ball of fluff used to being bathed while she’s young. You may thank yourself later. If your cat ever gets something on her fur, you at least have a shot at getting her clean without needing stitches yourself.

Coloring

Fluffy is typically, well, fluffy. Persians can sport a variety of pretty colors and patterns. Some of these include solid, silver and gold, shaded, smoke, tabby, particolor, bicolor, and Himalayan. We think they’re all really cute!

Chatter

Persians are rather talkative, but they aren’t very loud. Their voices are usually quite cute and charismatic, and perhaps a bit squeaky. They also tend to be quite interactive kitties.

Activity

Persians are about average on the kitty activity scale. They’re very playful as kittens, but once past that adorable toddler stage, they aren’t usually the type of cat you’ll be plucking from your drapes or disengaging from your ankle. These guys really do best as a pampered indoor ‘princess’ pet. We don’t recommend letting them go outdoors.

Health Issues

As you may have noticed, Persians are often quite flat-faced. Many breeders deliberately seek out that squished-face look, which is known as brachycephaly. This look may be cute, but unfortunately it leaves Persians vulnerable to some serious health issues, including shortness of breath, tearing, and eye problems. In fact, activists are now pushing for changes in the breed standard. This is something people owned by Persians should be aware of. Ask your vet for care tips.
